I love this project! First, students paint a warm color paper and a cool color paper with an interesting designs. The designs do not have to be the same. After the paper is dry, students cut strips of each design paper (horizontally). Then they weave the 2 bold color designs together. This weaving technique is not difficult, so any age can succeed. An original weave is made that is bright and just screams summer! The elements of art are used as well as practicing the use of watercolors.
I just did a post on my blog, "The ART of Education" on other ways to use the Principle of Movement in artwork! :) I will share your idea with my art department.
