Clay Slabs with Positive and Negative Space

First graders learned about positive and negative space by subtracting clay. After creating clay slabs, students embellished their clay with different patterns and designs. Each slab needed to have an addition after subtracting clay, so the "score" and "slip" method was used. Holes were poked on each side of the slab so the students could weave and string beads. Using watercolors and different kinds of beads, the students were able to create a nice wall ornament that was colorful and unique! Although the slabs are very fragile, the results were still outstanding!
