Why is art important?

Welcome back everyone to another fabulous year in art education!  New schools, new students, new projects, new adventures!  To kick off the school year, 4th and 5th grade students thought about "what is art?" and "why is art important?" Here is a look at some of their thoughtful answers.

I like this beginning of the year activity. I think it could progress into student conversations about their comments and lead to final comments produced by collaborative thinking. Without any prior discussion about what art is, I can imagine a student responding something like, "Art is drawing.", and another responding, "Art is painting." A random pairing could progress into a discussion among the students resulting in more thoughtful answers.

Hello!

I asked my class of 7 and 8 year olds "What is Art?" and told them there was no wrong answer, that everyone in the world could have a different idea and that was ok. I then had them write their idea on coloured card like you did and have it ready for them once term begins next week. Funny enough, they all only put responses of art being visual art and no dance, drama, or music as being art!
